Another Feb 11th, way back when, I made it into the nytimes. That’s me, the little girl pointing, with a lunch box slung over my shoulder. Yes, dear readers, it was 1988 and people were wondering about things like glasnost and whether Hosni Mubarak would accept the new peace proposal for the Middle East. But the style pages of the nytimes were featuring children’s fashion. My mother and I had no idea we’d been snapped until dozens of our friends sent us the clipping. It should be noted that my mother is very fashionable, creative and stylish and that I shall never be this cool ever again. That lunch box was one that she made, the strap was cut from a pair of her old jeans… I think she’s pregnant here with my little brother and we were off to find a maternity store. I clearly thought I knew where we should be heading! I found this clipping in a photo album a few weeks ago at our home in London. Here’s to you, Mummy, may your stylishness please rub off on me!
